Daily rental rates in South Africa will appear to be low, thanks to the depressed state of our currency on world financial markets. You benefit. All rates quoted following, both domestic and for international exchange, are current as of March 1,2005, but will fluctuate. Dollar values are in US currency.
The rates may, or may not, include VAT (our Value Added Tax - a sales tax). Visitors to our country may claim a full refund on all VAT paid by them during their stay upon departure. Provide full receipts, and go through the lengthy procedure with our Customs Officers. Or just go home ... you will have had the holiday of a lifetime at a very low cost to you while you were here ...
A basic rental vehicle will cost approximately R170 per day ($29, €22, £15). Some agencies will also offer unlimited mileage, but with slightly higher daily rates. Shop around on the Internet ... and do the arithmetic for your own travel plans. Perhaps use Car Rental South Africa or Car Rentals UK as a starting point. Major rental agencies may also include a rental-free cellular / mobile / portable telephone for your use during your stay as an incentive.
If you would prefer an air conditioned vehicle (a wise choice for our very hot summers, with temperatures often reaching 45ºC / 113ºF), or need automatic transmission, then vehicles offering various degrees of luxury are available offering both these options. The daily rates for VW Passat, Audi A4, BMW '3' series and Mercedes 'C' class range from R300 ($51, €39, £27) to R580 ($99, €75, £52).
You can also hire 4x4 / all-terrain / SUV vehicles, vans, and even Recreational Vehicles (RVs) / Motor homes / Campers / Dormolbiles. We have no daily rental rates available, but they will be at least as costly as luxury cars.
